Tours! Sign up for tours!

I had signed up for 3 tours today- one to visit the collections of artifacts we have in the basement of the institute, one for the library, and one for the Petrie museum. The first one was cool, because it's a teachign collection, which means you get to touch. Except for the metal. That you touch with gloves because your hand juices are like kryptonite to metal.

Anyway, they have some gorgeous museum quality stuff in the basement- there was this beautiful attic vase that I could have just eaten, and I don't even like that stuff. We got to touch it- it's fun to watch people get all nervous that they might break something. I figure it's what's going to keep me employed so break away.. I wanted to tell the story of how the amphora in the cyprus room got broken by the president of the school as a cautionary tale of not lifting things by the handles, but I kept my mouth shut. A lot of people hadn't handled objects before- thank you Stuart!

The library tour was.. interesting. The head librarian is kind of a nut. He had this wonderfully manicured beard that tufted out at the jawline in peaks. His is not the best beard I've seen, to be honest. That goes to a guy I saw in the park that was all bushy save one patch on one cheek. Perfectly bald. Speculation on the cause is encouraged. Back to library man.

The one thing he didn't cover, which was the only reason I went, was their wacky cataloguing system. It's unlike any other anywhere else (he did mention that) but he told us we'd figure it out. Completely unique to everywhere else.. but don't explain it. Fine. I could see him being a shouter so I resigned myself to boredom.

I did not go to the Petrie tour. I went to the fresher's fayre (their spelling, not mine) instead! Basically it's this long windy line with clubs and businesses on either side of you trying to get your email address. It's the most loved I've felt being here yet other than the obvious park squirrels trying to get a piece of my sandwich. And that isn't love at all. It's just big eyes and a cute face masking sharp claws and angry chitter.

Fresher's fayre- I made out with free jam from a supermarket, some pens, a few pads, a bunch of flyers, and in return for fistfuls of candy, I gave them my email. Good deal. The equestrian team gets free riding lessons. Here's hoping I don't ride like a bag of ass and get on the team!

There's an evening

Still in a hostel, although tomorrow I'm going to the external accomodation office (sounds ominous, right?) to get some help looking.
